"Comrades" by Eva Gore-Booth is a quietly powerful poem about love and solidarity that transcends physical imprisonment, and this print surrounds it with a lush, hand-painted botanical wreath for a piece that feels both literary and gentle. Written by the Irish poet and suffragist as a tribute to fellow activist Constance Markievicz, this poem has found new resonance as an LGBTQ+ literary print, often shared for its tender, coded portrayal of devotion between women.
The poem's imagery of spirits meeting freely under cover of night, no matter what walls or doors stand between them, gives it a timeless quality that speaks to anyone who has loved across distance, restriction, or circumstance. Set within a full, trailing wreath of soft green leaves, the design gives "Comrades" a romantic, botanical setting well suited to fans of Eva Gore-Booth poetry prints and readers drawn to overlooked queer and feminist literary history. It's a meaningful choice for anyone building a collection of historical LGBTQ+ wall art that celebrates quieter, lesser-known voices.
This print is a thoughtful gift for poetry lovers, history enthusiasts, or anyone drawn to early twentieth-century queer literature. It suits a study, reading nook, or living room gallery wall, and makes a considered gift for Pride, an anniversary, or simply for someone who appreciates poetry with real historical weight.
"Comrades".
"The peaceful night that round me flows,
Breaks through your iron prison doors,
Free through the world your spirit goes,
Forbidden hands are clasping yours.
The wind is our confederate,
The night has left her doors ajar,
We meet beyond earth’s barred gate,
Where all the world’s wild Rebels are."
